Being a Man of Truth
Pat Jones / Lead Pastor
“Jesus answered, “My teaching is not my own. It comes from the one who sent me. Anyone who chooses to do the will of God will find out whether my teaching comes from God or whether I speak on my own. Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.”” John 7:16-18
Recently, I restated a challenge I have given multiple times. I asked everyone to check for themselves whether what I say (or anyone else says) lines up with the Scriptures. I found it interesting that Jesus Himself gave the same challenge in the passage above.
If you truly choose to do the will of God, He said, you will find out if His teaching (or anyone who claims to speak for Him) comes from God or if they are speaking on their own for their own glory. In other words, we can’t claim to be doing the will of God if we are not willing to do the work of evaluating what we take in as true. And a side application is that we know the person speaking is trustworthy and of true character as well.
I had to ask myself if I am consistently and conscientiously doing the work? How about you?
