Constant, Unchanging, Immutable

“I will sing to the Lord all my life; I will sing praise to my God as long as I live. May my meditation be pleasing to him as I rejoice in the Lord.” Psalm 104:33-34

My grandmother used to say, “if you’re not sure what to wear, just look outside.” It sounds like an obvious answer, but she wasn’t referring to weather-appropriateness, rather color and seasonal compliments.

I have carried this simple wisdom with me my whole life. It always works. What I find most fascinating, however, is how she came to understand this little gem of advice herself. I don’t know.

My grandmother was orphaned at a very young age and lived in the J.N. Adams Memorial Hospital throughout childhood. She was not raised by a nurturing family where musings such as this would be shared and passed down. She was at best tolerated by nuns overwhelmed from the nation’s tuberculosis epidemic. My only conclusion is that somehow she came to this awareness through her own careful observation.

As I sit and look out my window, I admire the thick white blanket of snow that seems to glow and highlight everything around it; the ashy brown wood of the trees, the deep green of the arborvitae shrubs, the subdued blue-grey sky in the background, and the most brilliant pop of crimson from a male cardinal waiting for his mate to finish at the feeder. All would serve as the most beautiful interior color palette for a cozy winter getaway. It always works. It amazes me.

The more I contemplate my grandmother’s insight into something seemingly simple, the more I am overwhelmed by the magnitude of how supreme this methodology is! The same observations made to her then are the same observations made available to me right now in this moment! What was made evident then, is evident now, and will be far into the future. It’s an observation that is constant, unchanging, immutable, one who’s very existence is the teacher itself. It is one available to orphans and nurtured souls alike—a wonderment just waiting to be seen and admired.

Our Creator, like any passionate artist, has fervently revealed His nature through what He spoke from the beginning of time. Romans 1:20 states, “For since the creation of the world God’s invisible qualities-his eternal power and divine nature-have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse.” When I look outside and see all that has been made in perfect balance, I delight in its beauty. I am aware of my Creator’s existence, His sovereign majesty over me and I am humbled. I am an intentional piece of the Artist’s muse, inspired by purpose and sustained through love.

My grandmother most likely did not anticipate that her sage advice would serve as testimony to the existence of our Creator and His miraculous divinity. Her observation always works because it is governed by the Creator Himself, the Alpha and Omega, for all eternity, constant, unchanging, immutable. Praise the Lord for His goodness.

“The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they reveal knowledge. They have no speech; they use no words; no sound is heard from them. Yet their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world.” Psalm 19:1-4
