Two Simple Instructions

by Darilyn Thundat

“And she will have a son, and you are to name him Jesus, for he will save his people from their sins.” Matthew 1:21

I’ve never been able to make an edible loaf of bread. It always turns out hard and dry. I thought a bread machine would solve my problem. Following a few instructions and adding a few ingredients was sure to give me a beautiful, fluffy loaf I’d always dreamed of. Instead, what I got was a loaf with a hard crust and a chewy middle. Sometimes, simple instructions aren’t always simple.

When Joseph found out his fiancé, Mary, was pregnant, he thought about quietly divorcing her. He wanted to spare her the shame of public ridicule. That’s when an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream. “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the holy spirit. She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus., because he will save his people from their sins.”

Two simple instructions?

Take Mary as your wife.

Name the baby Jesus.

These instructions may have been simple, but they have the greatest meaning the world will ever know. This baby is God’s son that He sent into the world to be our perfect Savior, so believers can live eternally with Him.

Dear Heavenly Father, thank You for loving us so much that You sent Your precious son, Jesus, to save us. Amen.
