Laying the Foundation

A foundation serves several purposes in construction. It bears the load of the building by providing a firm and level surface, anchors it against natural forces like hurricanes and earthquakes, and isolates it from ground moisture. It has been said that it is the most important element in building a house. Often it looks like nothing is happening but what’s beneath the surface hugely impacts what is built upon it.

Recently we built a retaining wall. We bought all the product and were anxious to see that wall when it was up. My husband dug out the area, laid the crushed stone, and leveled and tamped it. It seemed to take forever, and it looked like we were making no progress. Then the first row of blocks went on and were leveled. After that, it seemed to go quickly and when the capstone went on and the level was placed on it the bubble was perfectly in the center. The time and effort that went into the foundation paid off.

Jesus Christ is the Solid Rock upon which we build. Study and growth in His Word provide a firm foundation. While we are applying those principles consistently over time, He is building a beautiful, strong, quality, God-honoring life upon it that will be able to withstand the tests and trials of time.

Take the time to build solidly. Invest in personal Bible study and prayer. Take advantage of the strong, quality building materials that the church offers. When the storms of life batter, your spiritual house will remain strong.
