What Needs to be Done Today, and No More

I think a current “cultural sin” is the constant need to be busy. It is so crucial for us to rest. I often need to tell myself that I don’t need to do hundreds of things each day. If I don’t get as much done as I expected to in one day, it’s totally okay. As part of the Next Gen staff, we recently finished Mega Camp (week-long VBS program). In the process of planning and helping to run it, I had more work responsibilities and even took some work home so we could all do our part and get it finished! As my work schedule was busier, one less load of laundry got cleaned, I defrosted leftovers for dinner instead of cooking, I didn’t attend dance class last week, and I even fell asleep reading my Bible. My point of that list is to say, God understands when there is a lot happening.

Our culture can make us feel guilty for not keeping a busy pace. I’ve been telling myself, finish what needs to be done today and no more. The culture will say we are being lazy but taking care of ourselves is crucial! If there is a season where things get hectic, we can’t forget to take time to relax. It is actually honoring God when we take care of our soul and body. Running too fast for too long will harm everyone.

Another thing I love to do to help myself relax is remember what Paul wrote, “Do all unto the glory of God.” 1 Corinthians 10:31. We can glorify God doing everything from sleeping to sweeping the floor. “All in Life” by Carmen is one of my favorite modern hymns. It helps me remember what truly matters. If I am not as busy as the culture tells me to be, all that matters is doing what God asks us to do. God helps us decide our battles.
