Meek Like Jesus

“Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.” Matthew 5:5
I remember one time someone described me as being “meek.” At first, I felt the remark was off-putting. In my mind, meek meant weak, passive, or just a plain old doormat for others. That is, until I understood the biblical meaning of meek vs. the world’s definition.
I’ve learned that meek describes a variety of character traits such as enduring injury with patience and without resentment, and to be humble as well as teachable. This sounds a lot like someone I know … Jesus.
I don’t know about you, but it can be difficult to practice self-control, kindness, and gentleness when I feel I’ve been wronged. At times, I can get caught up in asking, “Where is the justice in this situation?” I’ve learned that it’s not up to me to seek out justice, but to leave it up to God. In all honesty, responding in any other way than with patience and grace just makes things messier. I guess that’s where being meek can be beneficial.
When I put meekness in perspective, it doesn’t mean that I am without strength. It’s actually quite the opposite: I am strong and able to persevere because of Christ. It is His example that I can look to for fortitude. So, if being meek means that I can be more like Jesus, what else could I want?
