Coffee Shop Points of Light

Shawn King / Director College & Young Adults and Spiritual Formation Assistant

A couple of weeks back the college ministry went out to different places to do a Bible study. As we got into Spot Coffee on Transit Road near the church, I quickly noticed the guy behind the counter was having a rough night. He was alone out front, trying to make coffee, get desserts, and take peoples’ orders. He was a one-man show, and he looked tired from it. So, I thought, 'maybe I can encourage him a little bit, point him towards Christ and who knows, maybe he would be open to the Gospel?'

We exchanged some small talk back and forth and then he told me that he was the manager, and most everyone who had previously worked there had moved on to other things. On top of that, his staff for the night shift called in. So here he was in hour 13 or 14 of the day, trying to push through. I tried to make him smile, took my coffee and sat down with my group.

Halfway through, I felt compelled to pray for him, so I walked up and before I could say anything he asked me if we were doing a Bible study, because he himself was a believer who wanted to see Jesus show up in that place. “I would love to fill this place with Bible study groups,” he said. It struck me in that moment that so often there are more points of light in our work places, shopping places and just places we do life than we may ever realize. Now this gentleman and I can pray together for those who enter a coffee shop. Who knows that the Lord has brought this man to Spot coffee, “for such a time as this.” (Esther 4:14) Thank you Jesus for bringing us together to sow seeds of faith around WNY.
