My Way

Judi Wheat / Early Childhood Curriculum

Listening to the recent messages concerning adoption into God’s family brought back many memories of our son’s earthly adoption into our family. We were excited, filled with anticipation, and praying for God’s guidance. We were so blessed by God that four days after our son’s birth, we were able to bring him home from the hospital. It was an exciting time, along with some trepidation realizing the huge responsibility of becoming parents to this tiny baby.

Now, our time was devoted to his care and developing a relationship with this precious little baby boy; and, praying that the adoption would be finalized soon in Family Court. Nine months after his birth, he became our legally adopted child. It was a time of overwhelming joy and celebration!

As our son grew, he would watch us, study us, and imitate both our words and actions. He wanted to be like us. I can also remember as he grew, saying, “I do that Mommy” or “Daddy, let me.”

As I relate this to being adopted into God’s family, I found it to be exciting to know that my Savior loved me enough to die for me and that my sins were forgiven. There was great rejoicing in heaven in celebration of my adoption into God’s family. And, then began my journey to know Jesus, to study Him, to become like Him, and to develop a relationship with Him.

I found at times, just like my little boy, I wanted to do it my way and make my own choices, forgetting to ask God for His guidance. I learned that I needed to make a daily choice to follow Jesus, so that I could make the right choices and decisions to be His disciple. As the scripture states in Matthew 16:24, “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross (daily) and follow me.”

God does not force Himself on us, but He does promise to reveal Himself to us if we persistently and consistently seek Him. I have come to realize my relationship with God is the most important aspect of my life. I am to put my relationship with Him above everything else. I have found when I seek God daily, persistently, and wholeheartedly, my life is transformed, and I can live life to the fullest.
