Kari Broad / Next Gen Ministry Assistant

Summer is winding down and autumn is just around the corner. I cannot wait! I love the changing of seasons. This is especially true now that I am a mother. For my boys, everything is just so fresh, new, and exciting. Just today Carter noticed that some leaves were starting to change color on the trees. You would have thought he had just witnessed one of the Seven Wonders of the World. To him, it was just as breathtaking. So as I drove home he and I had a wonderful conversation about how the leaves change color, fall off the trees, and we then get to play in them. Then we discussed how “awesome” it is that God created trees and leaves and that we get to play in them. He was practically yelling as we talked because he was so excited. And Max was just as animated in his shrieks and giggles as he added to the conversation. Already at eleven months, he wants to be a part of whatever his brother is doing.

As we drove home I started to wonder when we lose that. When do we stop getting excited over the little things in life? When was the last time I was in awe of something?

I am so thankful that I have two chubby-cheeked boys to remind me just how exciting this world that our God created truly can be. Psalm 78:4 says “We will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, his power, and the wonders he has done.” Yes, this is so important. When you are on this earth for a while, you gain wisdom and should have many stories of the wonders that He has done. It is our responsibility to pass those on to the next generation.

My boys are growing. I hear it every day. “I can’t believe how big Max is getting.” Or “Carter has grown up so much in the last few months.” Sometimes it feels as though our time is slipping away. It’s mine and Andy’s job not only to take care of them by doing the basics such as feeding and bathing them, but we must also take time to show them the wonder and the power of the Lord. Right now that may be literally stopping to smell the roses and talk about how God not only created roses but them too. Right now, everything is a teachable moment with my boys and I am honored and humbled that God has given me such a responsibility.

I want to encourage you to take some time to invest in someone young. Tell them stories of God’s power and wonders. They need to hear it! But do you know what will happen in return? They might remind you just how exciting life can be.
