Do you have a “Bucket List”? All the cool people seem to have them these days. Needless to say, being not so very cool myself, I do not have one… but if I did, I can tell you with certainty one item that would NOT have appeared in any way, shape, or form is “Go to Africa.” If anything, it might have made the “Things I NEVER, EVER feel the need to do” list.
So, of course, as the saying goes, when you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans (or in my case, what you plan to NEVER, EVER do). This summer I was asked to join a team from EH Church going to Mozambique. Though I could vaguely hear the sound of His laughter (God has a good time with me, people, this is normal) I knew He was not joking. “Really? No. REALLY? You’re serious???” Yep. He was. And He made it pretty plain (ask me sometime, I’ll tell you all about it). So off to Africa I went!
This theme seems to replay itself for me. God brings something completely off the charts into my life, and then has the audacity to say “Trust Me.” So, of course, what do I do? I do the dance, kick and scream and drag my feet a bit, then, if I’m smart, concede. And you know what? I have never once regretted the decision to take Him at His word.
“Many are the plans of a man’s heart, but it is the Lord’s purpose that prevails.” Proverbs 19:21
Wouldn’t you know it, it turned out to be an amazing and (forgive the cliché) life-changing experience. If you want to hear more about it, make sure you read the next issue of Engaging Stories coming out in October! (How’s that for a shameless plug?)
