Advent Devotional: Day 8

Though you have not seen him, you love him…
— 1 Peter 1:8

Even though I can’t see God physically, I do know He is real and working in my life. There are times when I feel a nudge or a whisper and immediately know it is God speaking to me. If a friend comes to mind, I try to reach out to them. Almost always, they say they needed some encouragement that day. God gave them a hug through me and gave me joy in the process.

Sometimes though, God has a blessing meant just for me. One night this past summer, I went outside to enjoy the balmy night not expecting a thing. As I sat there listening to the cicadas singing while looking at the full moon, God’s peace washed over me. I believe God prompted me to go outside and He met me there. God wants to meet us where we are if we will only stop and listen. Sitting under the stars that night, I received an unexpected blessing!

Unfortunately, many times I don’t realize it is God whispering to my spirit and dismiss the thoughts that come to me. There have been times when I’ve thought of calling someone but didn’t follow through. One of these times, a friend passed away unexpectedly before I placed the call. Sadly, I missed the opportunity to talk to them one last time because I wasn’t in tune with God’s voice. It was a teaching moment for me. I realized I needed to become closer to God so I would recognize His voice like I recognize the voices of those close to me.

“After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.” I Kings 19:12b We all need to listen for the still, soft voice of our Savior. God is alive and working in each and every one of our lives!!

Father, thank You for the gift of Your gentle whispers. Even though I miss Your voice many times, You still love me and never give up on me. Please help me to be more in tune with Your voice and gentle leading in my life. Amen.
