The Bible’s First Prophecy = Peace

by Pam Jones

“And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel.” Genesis 3:15

How does this verse speak of peace? It doesn’t sound like peace when it has words like enmity, crushing, and striking. But it speaks of great peace because the subject of this prophecy is that even though we feel the conflict in our world between good and evil, Jesus is the victor!

The verse begins with stating that there is a natural animosity between Satan and mankind. Enmity has the idea of ill will, hatred, and a mutual antagonism. He shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise His heel. In this, God prophesies the doom of Satan, showing that the real battle is between Satan and the Seed of the Woman.

This is a prophecy of Jesus’ ultimate defeat of Satan. Yes, Satan would wound the Messiah (bruise His heel), but the Messiah would crush Satan with a mortal wound (bruise your head). The heel is within the serpent’s reach and Jesus, in humanity, placed Himself in his domain.

Also, in the first pages of Scripture, we see the first prophecy of the Bible. It is the prophecy of the virgin birth. God would bring His Son through the “seed” of the woman, not the man. Since that is physically impossible, it shows us that Jesus’ birth is from the woman alone through the Holy Spirit.

He shall bruise your head: God’s plan wasn’t “set back” when Adam and Eve sinned in the garden. His plan entailed something far greater, the redemption of mankind. His death on the cross and resurrection is the ultimate victory which brought salvation to us, and Jesus crushed Satan’s power at the cross.

Father, thank You for this verse which is full of meaning. Your first prophecy of the Bible of the virgin birth and the battle between God and Satan shows us your overwhelming power! Thank You, Jesus.
