Our God is Bigger

by Carla Catalano

“‘Though the mountains be shaken and the hills be removed, yet my unfailing love for you will not be shaken nor my covenant of peace be removed,’ says the LORD, who has compassion on you.” Isaiah 54:10

Have you ever felt like your world was falling apart? If you answered yes, you are not alone. In March of 2020, we experienced a Covid-19 induced pandemic that significantly altered our way of life and even threatened our spirituality. The enemy tried to surreptitiously steal our peace and destroy our way of life by keeping us isolated and fearful. We know as Christians that our God is bigger than a pandemic. Our first line of defense is to pray, to read the word, to immerse ourselves in songs of worship, and to praise His name. You see, when we do those things, we receive an indescribable divine peace and an everlasting grace. Philippians 4:6 reminds us, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.”

For some, the pandemic seemed to add to the cluster of insurmountable challenges that life hurls at you. What if I told you that the pandemic barely registered on our family's radar because we were already at war with the enemy. By the end of summer 2020, my husband discovered he had testicular cancer and had to have a surgical procedure in September. Days later, my daughter was involved in a car accident out of state. Although there was significant damage to her car, we praise God this accident left her uninjured.

During the following weeks, my daughter's health took a drastic turn, and she was admitted to ECMC a couple days before Thanksgiving. The next several months included hospitalization, changes to medications, an MRI, genetic testing and more. During this time, we prayed for health, healing, and complete restoration. During her third visit to the hospital, I was completely calm and flooded with a feeling of extraordinary peace. It wasn't until I had a phone call with a doctor at ECMC that I knew our prayers were answered. It was at this exact moment that I felt the Holy Spirit. I knew that Jesus had been with our family all along and our daughter would be okay. I was most certain and overwhelmed with His everlasting love.
Heavenly Father, when it appears that the mountains in our world are shaking or turned upside down – help us to remember that You, our God, are always faithful. Amen.
