Listen More

Deanna Gworek / Global Missions Administrative Assistant

As I have been speaking to friends and colleagues over the past few weeks, I’ve been trying to remind myself to listen more, to not jump in and give my opinion, or share a story from my life that I think relates. By truly listening, I am more aware of the heartache and struggles all around instead of being focused on my own hardships.

Sometimes I’ve heard frustration from mandates and shutdowns, sometimes the pain has been more indirectly tied to COVID, and then others just have hurt from everyday life instances of disease or broken relationships. I’ve realized that every one of us is going through something.

While that may seem discouraging, God has shown me something quite different. I’m fortunate enough to be surrounded by those that put their faith in Jesus. Every story I’ve heard recently, even those told through tear-filled eyes, has still included some sense of hope. And because of their willingness to share their hardships with me, I have been blessed. I get to pray for these amazing people, and I see us coming together in support and love for one another.

Even though my heart hurts for those that are struggling, since I’ve started listening more, I am not just hearing the negative, but I see the peace that God has given them to go through the day well. I know this is only possible through the Holy Spirit. It’s a reminder to fix your eyes on Jesus, no matter what you are facing. He gives us joy no matter our circumstances.
