What Passes Away

“The world and its desires pass away, but whoever does the will of God lives forever.” 1 John 2:17

I just recently celebrated my birthday and have been reflecting on my life journey. I spent a little under two decades in Deaconess Hospital for both the beginning of my education in nursing and my working career. If you drive pass that site today, it is just a large lot of green grass. Those buildings which at the time I thought were so important and would still be here today, turned out to not be so. It reminded me of the brevity of life and what should be important. One of the places where I had such great experiences does not exist anymore.

In one of my recent devotional readings, the author expressed it this way, “Reflecting on that experience later brought me to this truth, expressed by an aging King David: ‘The life of mortals is like grass, they flourish like a flower of the field; the wind blows over it and it is gone, and its place remembers it no more. But from everlasting to everlasting the LORD’s love is with those who fear Him.’” (Psalm 103:15-17)

As I am growing older, I see the world changing around me. There is ever-increasing darkness and confusion, where right is wrong and wrong is right, but God’s love does not change, and God’s Word can serve as a light to anchor us to His truth. He can always be trusted to take care of those who turn and put their trust in Him. We can always depend on our unchanging God.
