I don’t know why, but lately I’m thinking a lot about how short life is.
Now there’s a happy thought!
Truth be told, that thought is never too far from me. Maybe it’s because I get the privilege to sing at various funerals here and there. Or maybe it’s because I’m realizing that I’m not 20 anymore … not by a longshot. And then there was this time last year, when I was dealing with a “wee bit of cancer” … which, praise the Lord, as of my last check up is still G-O-N-E- yippee!
But lately, it’s really occurring to me that our time here is, as Scripture puts it, like grass that withers and flowers that fade. We are just a vapor. Ok, I know that’s depressing, but it gets better. The one thing we CAN count on that WILL last forever is God’s Word. And let me tell you, I am counting on that these days like never before.
I moved to this area ten years ago, to start two new adventures: 1) To become Mrs. Kenneth Carmichael, and 2) To be a part of the life of Eastern Hills Wesleyan Church. What an adventure it’s been so far! And wow, has that time gone by quickly - like a vapor! I’m glad to say, by the grace of God, I am looking forward to continuing the adventure with Ken (and now Felicity) for many years to come. I am also excited to say that we are following the Lord’s leading to start a new adventure as a family … but along with that excitement comes genuine sadness, as the adventure will take us out of WNY, to the Pittsburgh area this summer. To even begin to recount all that God has done these past ten years to bless, shape, change, inspire, challenge, refine, mold me and make me into someone who looks a little more like Jesus than I did 10 years ago … well, I just simply can’t.
But I can say this. My time here at Eastern Hills, though like a vapor, has been precious beyond what I can put into words. So yes, maybe that’s why all this has been on my mind lately. Our days go so quickly. Our lives are short. But our days matter. Our lives matter. Wherever we are, God has a purpose, even as He has a number for our days. If I’ve learned anything from my time here, it’s that however long and wherever I live, I want to live well.
Please pray for us on this new adventure. And know that we will be praying for yours. After all, as the Body of Christ, we are all part of God’s GREAT adventure!
