I’ve been listening to ‘You Make Me Brave’ by Bethel Music a lot lately (as in, my worship leader husband has been learning it and I’ve heard it on the phone, cd, computer, piano, electric, acoustic, maracas… ok just kidding about the maracas!).

A line in the bridge says, “You make me brave/You make me brave/You call me out beyond the shore into the waves.” That line alone makes me imagine God being my strength to face big, scary trials and obstacles. I imagine ‘waves’ that symbolize going on mission trips, facing illnesses, and confronting enemies.

But then I heard it in the midst of a worship set at IGNITE: College and Young Adult group and I did more than just listen – I worshipped God through the song. And while I was singing those words to Him and opening myself to listen, He showed me a different meaning.

Right now God is reminding me how very close I still am to the shore, where I get to do things my way. He’s calling me out further just to be with Him. The bravery I lack is often just to trust God with the smallest of things. Many times I would rather hide than admit my disappointments or shortcomings. God’s love and grace make me brave enough to admit exactly who I am.

The ocean is big and its currents may very well lead me to face one of those bigger waves I originally imagined. Until then, God is gently encouraging me to keep trusting Him in all things, big or small.
