This past weekend I had the opportunity to travel to Colonial Williamsburg, Virginia. I’m a big history buff so this trip was on my top 10 list. This historic city has many re-enactments and actors that immerse you into a different time period of America’s humble beginnings. At 1pm the statesmen of Williamsburg come out from the capitol building to read the Declaration of Independence to the citizens (and visitors) of Williamsburg. Following the poignant reading, a fife and drum corps marches from the capitol building through the streets to the governor’s palace. While taking in the sights and sounds of this experience my emotions caught up with me. For a brief second I felt as though I was there that day some 200 years ago, realizing my freedom as a citizen of this new country. While following this rag tag band I began to think… some 2,000 years ago another man declared our freedom. He declared our sin was paid, that we are made new, that we could have life and have it eternally. Jesus’s death is why we can have hope in this life. We can look forward and face each new day with courage. Because in Christ we do not need to fear, we do not need to worry. We can live in freedom!
