Advent Devotional: Day 25

For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder.
— Isaiah 9:6

The Messiah is described as a royal heir. He is born to govern, and His rule will bring remarkable blessings to God’s people. The next verse says, “Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end…” Now, I don’t think I’m alone in feeling that our world isn’t full of peace. It feels far from peaceful. What do we do with this? Our world needs peace. Individuals need peace. Families need peace. Christians needs peace. How do we live a life of peace that Jesus has given us? Do we expect the unexpected? Do I expect Jesus to show up and give me the peace I need?

So, Jesus was born to govern and bring blessings to God’s people and to bring peace. We can have peace.

  1. Peace with God: Jesus has died to give us peace. “Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ.” (Romans 5:1) It is only in Jesus that the terror of God’s wrath is turned away from us and new hope is born. This is a peace that we cannot forge on our own—a peace that can only be bestowed by the Prince of Peace as an act of God’s grace.

  2. Peace Within: Scripture tells us that the fruit of this relationship with Jesus is peace in our hearts. Peace is the answer to anxiety for Christians. “Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.” (Philippians 4:6-7)

  3. Peace with Others: “But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace.” (Galatians 5:22) Our relationship with God creates a shift in our dealings with others. Before we pursued our own agendas; now we pursue peace. Let’s know the Prince of Peace and live His peace.

Jesus, thank You for governing and for bringing peace; peace with You, peace within, and peace with others because of Your great power. We expect the unexpected.
