Advent Devotional: Day 23

For no word from God will ever fail.
— Luke 1:37

What words from God do you hold close? Are they words of wisdom, promises, commands?

The words God gives us in the Bible hold life. For Mary, the words the angel spoke in many ways held life, the life of our Savior. Unexpected angelic visits were happening at the time. Elizabeth was six months pregnant, and Mary was just told of bearing Jesus, becoming a mother to the King of Israel. So many big surprises in the words she had just heard. Gobsmacked! Overwhelmed! Unbelievable! Mary took it all in, accepting what the angel said as truth.

The more I grow in Christ, the more value His words contain. I would like to think that is because I have experienced the truth of this verse. He doesn’t fail and neither do His words.

There are words in the Bible that I have heard many times over but have not yet sunk in for me. My entire life I have heard God’s Word is true, His promises are reliable, but it wasn’t until I put His words to the test that they became true to me … they held life. Unfortunately, it took many hard times for me to come to the point of believing God’s words.

What has God spoken to you recently? How did His words make you feel? Did you tell anyone? What was your response? More times than I can recall, I was overwhelmed by circumstances. How do you preserve what is dear to you? Protect what you love? Let’s do the same with the words of God. Hold them close, memorize truth, tell others of what God has said and done in our lives, just as Mary hurried off to Elizabeth, and not only did they rejoice together at the works of the Lord, but baby John in Elizabeth’s womb rejoiced at God’s works.

Lord, may I hold Your words in great esteem, they are just as You are, never failing. Thank You for the gift of Your words and Your involvement in my life.
