Advent Devotional Day 13
by Mary Lou Wawrzyniak
“Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you.” John 14:27
Christmas brings back wonderful childhood memories. I remember the excitement of finding presents under the tree, along with that wonderful feeling of peace when leaving our Christmas church service.
During my teenage years, I chose a life of staying out late, partying, and drinking alcohol. It was what the world was offering back in the 60’s, doing what makes you feel good. Eventually, I found myself pregnant and filled with the fear that my parents and others would find out. It seemed like my only option was to end my pregnancy, so I could finish college and try to get on with my life. Instead of relief, I was filled with intense shame and guilt, feeling like my life was over; but that is when God stepped in to rescue me.
I was given a Bible by a man at work and invited to attend a Bible study. As the weeks went by, I found myself looking forward to attending class. Then, one day after class, the teacher approached me and said, “Do you know Jesus Christ?” I nodded and he asked, “I mean, do you really KNOW Him?” Embarrassed and convicted, I responded, “No, I don’t know Jesus that well.” He immediately turned to John 3:16 and had me read it over more than a few times. Next, he said, “Now I would like you to stand and read this verse to the class and put your name into it.” Slowly I stood trembling and began, “For God so loved Mary Lou, that He gave His only begotten Son …” After finishing the verse, I sat down feeling quite numb, not knowing what was happening to me. As I left class that day, it was as if a weight had been lifted off my back. The thought hit me, “God really does love me and is willing to forgive me for all my sins!” Soon after, I had the privilege of giving my life to Christ and finally discovered how to have true peace.
Thank You, Lord, for giving us the greatest Christmas gift - Your son, Jesus Christ. “For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us.”
