Jesus Over EMOTIONS

Read Luke 19:28-44

What a scene. Jesus is preparing to enter Jerusalem on one of the most sacred feasts of the year. He sends two disciples to the nearby village to obtain a young donkey for Him to ride. They are told that if asked why they are untying the donkey they are to respond, “The Lord needs it.” Jesus descends the Mount of Olives riding the donkey, the sign that a king is coming in peace. The crowd throws down cloaks and palm branches and shouts a messianic phrase, “Hosanna. Blessed is the king who comes in the name of the Lord.”

Religious leaders tell Jesus to rebuke His disciples because to them the crowds were shouting heresy. But Jesus said the stones would cry out if the crowds did not. Then He wept over the city.

The Lord’s need to use the donkey overcame the emotion of fear of loss. Jesus’ procession as a king coming in peace, acknowledged for the miracles He had performed, fulfilled the crowd’s anticipation and longing for a Savior. Jesus’ power as Creator silenced the rebuke of the hardened hearts. And His tears condemned the years of faithlessness for a city headed for destruction.

Over all these circumstances, He was (and is) Lord. And by the end of the week, He will be declared such in power through His resurrection!
