Having a Thankful Heart

Joni Canastraro / Graphic Designer

When I am designing in Photoshop, there is a feature called the “History Panel” that allows me to undo previous steps if I decide I do not like the way the design is progressing. At times, I have wished I could apply this feature to my life and “undo” some things I look back on with regret.

I know my Heavenly Father does not want me to ever look back with regret, but rather look ahead with expectancy of what He has planned for my life. He knows unchecked regret can manifest itself in many different ways that can cause separation between us.

I have come to understand that the best way to counter this negative mindset is to live a life of thankfulness. I have a limited human perspective and only see what my eyes can see in the natural. God sees the whole picture and, I am sure, has shielded me from things I thought would have been good for me.

Sometimes it is just a matter of changing our thinking by realizing what we are thinking. Once realized, a quick “Thank You, Lord!” can usher in peace that surpasses all understanding.

I have an image at my desk that reads “God has two dwellings: one in heaven, and the other in a meek and thankful heart.” It is a constant reminder on those days when I am not feeling very thankful.

When my heart is full of thanks, I believe God can do wonderful things through me that can touch the lives of others and perhaps lead to eternal blessings.

“For we live by faith, not by sight.” 2 Corinthians 5:7

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” 1 Thessalonians 5:18

“You turned my wailing into dancing; You removed my sackcloth and clothed me with joy, that my heart may sing to You and not be silent. O Lord my God, I will give You thanks forever.” Psalm 30:11-12
