Independence and Dependence

by Pastor Suk May Yei / Cross-cultural Ministries

“Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge him, and He will make your paths straight.” Proverbs 3:5-6

When thanking God for our country’s 241st birthday – Independence Day, it came to my mind what it means by Independence. Our forefathers’ Independence pursuit called us to be independent from an earthly regime in order to have freedom to be more Dependent on our Dear Lord! So, “independent” actually means a call for “dependent”!

Likewise, while the world keeps urging us to leave the “old ways” in order to strain ahead towards earthly prize; the scriptures call us to follow the very “ancient way” – Love the Lord and obey to His Words (Deuteronomy 6:5, Matthew 22:37, John 14:15, 21, 23) and the prize is already there (Philippians 3:13-14). So “straining ahead” actually means “coming back to the basic.” No wonder nowadays we see more and more people striving for organic food, relaxation in nature, or longing desperately for fulfillment of their souls as well as the “old fashioned” long-lasting marriage!

It looks like we need a new dictionary for life, but we don’t because they are all in the Scriptures since the very beginning. As we all can have God’s precious Words to be the lamp to our feet and the light for our path (Psalm 119:105), and His thoughts and ways are always higher than ours (Isaiah 55:8-9), we are so blessed!

Thank You, Jesus! Praise YOU for all!
