Kids Are Like Olive Trees

The theme for 2016 at Eastern Hills has been Walking With God. We are all on a journey of faith, and we have the blessing of walking not only with God, but with each other as well. We have friends, coworkers, gym buddies, as well as family members that we are on the journey with.

Melissa Hartwig (Next Gen Elementary Ass't Director) is reflecting on the blog this week about the journey she is on as mother to teenagers.

I am the mom of three teenagers! I am enjoying these teenage years, and they are great teenagers, but there are some days that I wonder if I am still getting through. If what I am saying is still being taken to heart.

I read a devotional that encouraged me a couple of weeks ago. It said our children are “like young olive trees around our table.” It talked about how very slowly an olive tree grows and that it’s even slower to produce good tasting fruit.

It went on to say, the farmer may not see fruit for a long while, but continues to faithfully invest and care for the tree even after it starts to bear fruit. Like the olive tree farmer, our job as parents is to continue to invest, teach, train, love, kiss, clean, preserve, and point to Jesus through all the phases of life.

I am also reminded of the partnership our Next Gen Ministry has with us parents. I am so very thankful to those people who have invested and continue to invest in my kids. They are the saying the same thing I am saying, just in case what I am saying isn’t going straight to the heart these days.
