Blessing this Land
Having traveled to so many places this year on mission trips, I realize how very blessed we are to live in this county. As much as I dislike paying taxes, I see the tremendous value in it when I return from a mission trip to a developing nation like Haiti or Mozambique.
We have paved streets, rules for driving on the roads which are enforced, stoplights to keep the flow of traffic consistent, and street lights to illuminate our neighborhoods. There are sidewalks to keep us safe as we walk places. We have fresh clean water from faucets in our homes, regular garbage pick-up and sewer systems allowing us to have flush toilets. There is help for the homeless, medical care for everyone. Free public education and the list of what our taxes pay for goes on. It is easy to think the taxes we pay to the Government are what afford us these luxuries. Luxuries many nations live without. Yet in reality, it is God who has blessed this land for now. Each mission trip, to a developing nation, reminds me to be grateful for God’s provisions to this country. Something I don’t ever want to take for granted.
It is comfortable to think the blessings God has poured out on this great nation will always continue. Yet, when I watch the news and documentaries on TV or listen to Christian talk radio shows there is a big question mark as to how long God is going to bestow His blessings. Citizens and politicians in our country are increasingly turning away from God’s precepts and doing what is right in their own minds.
Sometimes, I wonder, is there still hope for America? Then I realize I am a foreigner here also. My true home is in heaven with our Savior. “But our citizenship is in heaven. And we eagerly await a Savior from there, the Lord Jesus Christ…” Philippians 3:20
Concerning my temporary homeland, 2 Chronicles 7:14 encourages us as Christians to humble ourselves, pray, seek God and ask for forgiveness for our country. Will you join me and pray for our nation regularly?
“Then if my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sins and restore their land.” 2 Chronicles 7:14
