Silence Really is Golden

I’ve heard this my whole life, and often thought to myself “yea right…” I’m the kind of guy who has to have something playing in the background while I’m working. Whether it is music, a movie, or someone talking, I rarely ever have times of this “golden silence.” I didn’t necessarily think it was a bad thing that I needed background noise to function. A friend recently challenged me with a question… “When do you spend time listening to God?” That got me thinking… I almost never spend time in silence, just to hear God speak. So this new year I set a goal (because resolutions are so overrated); I looked for an area of my day that I could set aside as silent time. Doing nothing but listening to God and quietly reflecting. One of the most available times I found is the ride to and from work each day. So for the past few days I’ve turned the music off and spent my ride in silence. I’ve been amazed at how God has used that time to speak into my life. We are only a few days into this New Year, but I already look forward to the morning and afternoon commute. God is always looking to spend more time with us, sometimes we just need to quiet our lives and turn off the noise. I’ve found that whoever made that statement was right… Silence really is golden!

“Be still, and know that I am God. I will be exalted among the nations, I will be exalted in the earth!” Psalm 46:10
